Week 4 - Introduction to Themes

Finalisation of folie design was coming close during week 4.The biggest changes made were to the girders which went from free flowing tentacles to straight rigid arms, supporting the folie. Different segments of the project were dispatched to different members to ensure the workload was even, and completed on time.

Folie Concept: 'The Fallen' is an intimate memorial space which floats along Howard Smith Wharves. Its compelling envelope and atmosphere is designed in a way to attract Brisbane's youth society, and draw them into a world which exposes the true nature of WWII.

Folie Context: The design mimics its surroundings appropriately by addressing the historical value of Howard Smith Wharves, involving heritage listed buildings and construction such as the multiple sheds scattered along the river bank, and the Storey Bridge. Its direct fall also coincides with the cliffs contours, becoming one with the environment.

Folie Function: Young people will enter the site, being lurred towards the folie location. From this moment onwards, curiosity is being learnt. Once entry into the folie, the user will experience new ideas and emotions about not only the war and its soldiers, but about Howard Smith Wharves relationship to both. New ways of thinking will be formulated, as respect begins to evolve.

Folie Tectonic: Steel girders serve as support beams which hold the folie into place on top of the cliff. A truss system will also be incorporated between these girders which will act in tension and compression, assuring structural support. Electric blue LED lighting will additionally encapsulate the truss system, providing a vibrance against the dark cliff face during night time. The folie's envelope will make up of grey-silver zinc cladding which corresponds to the aesthetics of the Storey Bridge.

Folie Experience:  During nightfall, LED lighting which grows from the girders onto the folie will create exhilirating visuals from the city side, drawing in users. 50mm holes punched throughout the folie facade will allow natural light to burst into the interior during different times of day depending on sun angles. This creates an emotional atmosphere as light hits pictures, words and phrases located within. Users will circulate around the folie, following its journey as it informs them of the fallen soldiers of the past and of the importance Howard Smith Wharves has regarding the war.

THE FALLEN

"War is declared Spetember 3rd 1939.

Australian troops are released all around the world to help our allies in England and America. By May and June 1942, Australia becomes a target for the Japanese army and we are under attack.

During this time, Brisbane, facing minimal attack, still prepared itself for danger. Construction of the Story Bridge was under way, but had to be postponed. Efforts went into a different direction, developing five air-raid shelters just below the cliff face.

August 15th, 1945. The war is over.

World War 2, in its memory, stays with its people all around the world. Generations have known the sacrifices and bravery of our war-time heroes, but recently it has been lost. Younger generations are losing their knowledge and respect for the veterans, and the remembrance of the fallen.
This forms the concept of the Folie, a modern memorial, designed to intrigue the younger generation so they too are able to reflect and learn about the soldiers who fought for Australia. The structural components incorporate elements from the Story Bridge, while also forming a ‘bomb-shelter’ like pod, with materials they would have used in the war, and openings shaped as ‘bullet holes’ for light manipulation and atmosphere. This inside space, also incorporating text for information on the war, will use pop-culture posters from the 1940’s that promotes Australia and its Army recruitment during that period. This becomes visually appealing, which in turn promotes learning and creates an atmosphere in which they can truly reflect on the fallen".
